Addiction Treatment Aloha House Inc. provides many opportunities for adults and adolescents on Maui to find their way through the impact that alcohol and drugs have had on their life and the lives of those close to them. Aloha House supports people to find their strengths and while learning from their pasts and finding new ways to live life. The people who work at Aloha House are passionate about assisting those they serve, to find their path of health and wellness. Aloha House is funded by most insurances and for those without insurance or unable to pay for treatment, AH is funded by the Department of Health, through their Drug and Alcohol department, the Judiciary, and Maui County. Addiction is a disease that impacts mind, body, spirit, families and friends. The recovery process touches on all aspects of a person’s life. Aloha House assists and supports the clients in becoming drug and alcohol free and facing all of the issues in their lives that have interfered with their health, happiness, work and healthy relationships. The staff of help our clients reconnect with family, community and a sense of their own self worth. It is a chance to start over and overcome feelings of helplessness and hopelessness. Different levels of impact on a person’s life require different levels of treatment, and we begin by meeting with the person and at times their families, to talk and understand the full extent of the impact of drugs, alcohol and crime in their life. From there, we recommend the best possible program to meet the person at their level of need. SERVICES FOR ADULTS Intervention and Screening: There is a central number anyone can call to seek help from AH. AH professional staff can meet with a potential client, and or family member and through skillful interviewing help determine which level of care to recommend. This is done without judgment, fully supporting the client to get the help they need. It is not uncommon for someone with substance abuse problems to not be completely ready for help. The interview process can often help shift the person’s motivation towards wanting a new start that can be offered through the many treatment options at AH. Education: AH has classes for people to learn about the mental, physical, emotional, legal and social impact of drugs and alcohol. Often people attend these classes due to driving violations. Group Treatment: AH utilizes groups as the primary treatment format. Groups are a powerful treatment tool for people with substance abuse problems. It is through education, deep understanding of underlying problems and an opportunity to be with others who have experience similar traumas, that people find healing. For some people, attending groups at our outpatient programs is the best choice. The groups are generally 3 times a week, and there is a choice of day time or evenings. People live at home and can even keep working while in treatment. For other people a real “time-out” from their daily life is needed, and for those people AH offers a residential treatment option. There is time in the beginning of treatment to focus entirely on detoxifying from the substances, followed by group and individual counseling. This program is a comprehensive integrated curriculum of education, in depth counseling, family therapy and regular opportunities to connect to nature and cultural activities. Individual Treatment: Private sessions with a qualified mental health and substance abuse professional are part of both our outpatient program and residential program. Time is needed for more in-depth exploration of feelings, family history, traumatic events, and other issues that, when addressed, enhance recovery. Family Therapy: Addiction is a family disease in that everyone is affected, in a variety of ways by the family member who is experiencing substance abuse and addiction issues. AH recognizes that a primary component of recovery is working with the family to facilitate healing, forgiveness and reconnection. SERVICES FOR TEENAGERS GROUP AND INDIVIDUAL COUNSELING ON CAMPUS: AH has developed comprehensive and effective programs in all of Maui and Lanai High Schools and Middle Schools for young people dealing with substance abuse problems. AH, through funding from the Department of Health, Alcohol and Drug Division, and cooperation with Department of Education, has counselors located at each campus. Teens are supported by a positive peer culture to become and stay drug and alcohol free. This is a confidential program on campus and students can find a safe haven to seek help without fear of reprisal. The groups occur during the school day and students are welcome and encouraged to seek out the AH counselor on campus, before school, during lunch and after school as well as participate in the formal groups. Teenagers are group oriented by nature, and building on that natural longing to belong, AH counselors offer an engaging and motivating program on campus. PREVENTION THROUGH POSITIVE PEER CULTURE:The Maui Hero Project is a program AH has embraced which uses adventure, ceremony and a powerful peer culture to offer alternatives to Maui youth who might be at risk to engage in drug and alcohol uses. MHP is an exciting outdoor adventure based program led by energetic and dynamic counselors. The program has been funded by the Hawaiian Community Foundation as well as the Department of Health’s Alcohol and Drug Division.
